Tell us a bit about who you are and what you do at Spark?

I’m Kate,  Junior Designer at Spark. I’ve been here just over a year after graduating from Falmouth University and I’m loving it. It’s been a great opportunity to work across a wide range of sectors, clients & projects.

I work across a variety of projects from brand to web whilst also supporting the rest of the design team. We’re a small team so this has really helped me whilst finding my feet and settling into busy agency life. Each day is different which has allowed me to explore what I enjoy doing and also push me to learn new skills on the job.

What’s the best thing about working in the agency?

You’re constantly pushing boundaries and challenging yourself which has been a big part of my journey, where’s the fun in being comfortable right? It keeps you on your toes and means you never stop learning, plus it helps when you’ve got a team that’s dedicated to sharing their knowledge and keyboard shortcuts!

I do Like ‘Club monthly’ in which we all share interesting things we’ve seen, be it campaigns, rebrands or latest tech developments. It’s really interesting to see what everyone’s finding inspiring and to know what’s going on in the industry.

Tell us a bit about your journey before Spark

After trying my hand at just about anything creative I made the decision to study Fashion Photography at Falmouth Uni down in Cornwall, however I soon realised I enjoyed having my head in InDesign more than trying to round up models. I then switched to Graphic Design and everything fell into place.

Before graduating I did a placement with Nixon Design which was my first taste of studio life! I also took part in Pearlfisher’s student competition and became a finalist which gave me the chance to travel to their studio, meet the team and discuss my portfolio which was a great experience.

What has been your career highlight to date?

Working with Humans MCR has definitely been a highlight of my career so far. I’ve always had a desire to design for good and make a positive impact with the work that I do so it’s an important one for me. It’s very rewarding to be able to develop the Humans MCR brand & website to ensure they’re maximising their impact. We’ve also had the opportunity to volunteer in their hub which has provided first hand insight into the important work they do.

Tell us an unpopular opinion

Winter over Summer, always! Don’t get me wrong the sun is welcome within moderation but there’s just something about listening to the rain, hunkering down in a cosy pub, and crisp cold mornings.

Do you have a party trick/fun fact about yourself?

I have an unlimited amount of niche peep show references! It may be the repetitive watching but it just happens to be a highly quotable show. It’s quite likely that important knowledge or facts have escaped my brain to be able to hold onto them!

If you’d like to see some of Kate’s work, learn more about becoming a designer or feel you’d like to go head to head with her on her Peep Show knowledge just get in touch.
